FAQ

What uses the most electricity in a home?

Of the 36 appliances on this site, at typical use and the U.S. average rate (18.16¢/kWh, August 2026), the biggest yearly costs are: electric water heater about $895 a year; central air conditioner about $610 a year; rv air conditioner about $157 a year. Your own ranking depends on what you have and how long you run it; add your appliances above to see it.

Why is my estimate lower than my electricity bill?

Bills add fixed monthly charges, taxes and fees, and they include everything plugged in, including appliances you didn't add here. Heating and cooling also change a lot from month to month. Use the rate per kWh printed on your bill for the closest match.

How do I compare two appliances?

Add just those two. The list shows which one costs more per month and its share of the total, at the hours you set.

Note: These are estimates. Real consumption depends on the exact model, its age, settings, room temperature and how you use it. For your exact number, check the appliance's label or measure it with a plug-in energy meter. Rates are August 2026 state averages from the EIA; check your bill for your actual rate. When powering appliances from a generator or power station, never exceed its rated output and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.
